Graham Construction, a multi-skilled organisation operating in the construction, asset management and project investment sectors, were contracted to design and construct the "UK's most technically-advanced" biomass handling terminal, at Immingham in North East Lincolnshire.
Award winning in its design and construction, the 11.5-acre site
handles over six million tonnes per year, stores 200,000 tonnes of wood
pellets and features eight silos with a total capacity of 336,000m3 equivalent to 120 Olympic-sized swimming pools. Record breaking in its own
right, the Terminal facilitated the world’s largest ever single shipment of
biomass, almost 60,000 metric wood pellets, in July 2015.
The facility, for importing, storing and onward transfer of renewable fuel (wood pellets) needed to be capable of offloading pellets from ships and handling 2,500 tonnes per hour. The terminal also needed the capacity to store 100,000 tonnes of fuel and include fire suppression, heat monitoring and dust extraction systems.
