Trams have been operating in Blackpool since 1885 and through to Cleveleys and Fleetwood since 1898. The trams carry millions of passengers every year and form a key local tourist attraction. The Tramway, which is owned by Blackpool Council, runs from the town along the Fylde Coast into Lancashire, serving Cleveleys and Fleetwood.

£100m was invested in upgrading the tramway to achieve quicker journey times and to ensure the service continues to operate for future generations.

Included in the upgrade were new easy access tram stops. Glass reinforced concrete floor panels manufactured by GRC UK Ltd were laid across the tracks to allow pedestrians to access either platform easily.

The floor panels were high quality, non-slip surfaces and the client requested that the panels should be protected to ensure a long life-span.

Epicuro was chosen to supply the project with its HBG-HD solution, specified for the protection of exposed concrete surfaces. Not only does this unique formula penetrate the concrete’s surface to form an invisible barrier that repels water and oily liquids as well as resisting road dirt, it also complies with the EN1504-2 standard and doubles as an invisible anti-graffiti treatment.

Additional to this is HBG-HD’s ability to increase the surface’s lifespan, which reduces the need for costly maintenance and cleaning.

HBG-HD was applied to all of the GRC panels to give optimum protection against water, stains, oil, de-icing salts, chewing gum and other surface contaminants. HBG-HD ensures that this contaminants cannot penetrate the pavement’s surface and instead sit on top of a protective barrier.
