In order to boost tourism within the historic slate mining town of Blaenau Ffestiniog, its town centre went under a substantial £4.5m make-over which included improvements to the train station, Diffwys Square, High Street & Church Street areas
Renowned artist Howard Bowcott was commissioned to remodel the main square with a series of slate sculptures and ground features as part of the renovation works.
Due to the wet environment in the area, protection of all stone and concrete surfaces was seen as a necessity to keep the area clean and pristine and keeping the streets clean and chewing gum free had previously been a major problem for the local council.
